Dwight Yorke will always be remembered for his stint at Manchester United as one of the most formidable goal scorers in the Premier League allowing him and his team to win the treble in 1999 (Premier League, FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League).
But it was his time in Australia that our team worked closely with the smiling Yorke.
The A-League had only just launched in 2005-2006 with Dwight as the games marquee signing. Paid over $1 million, and it was money well spent, ‘Yorkie' captained Sydney FC to championship glory in that inaugural season against Central Coast Mariners. ”I have incredible memories of my time with the club and to set up the winning goal in the grand final for Steve Corica was nice” said Yorke.
Apart from his on-field success in Australia he was a regular on the PR circuit and amassed multiple relationships with major sponsors and partners of the game Dwight made a point to use his influence to lift the profile of the game in Australia, allowing a much wider audience to feel connected.
Since retiring in 2009 Dwight has become a regular visitor to Australian shores.
